教材英文原文:

The weather forecast is not good.

According to some experts, we will have hotter days, warmer nights, and crazier weather in the years to come.

There will be more heavy rains, more floods and mudslides, more blizzards, and even more tornadoes and typhoons.
And to make matters worse, many scientists believe that global warming will cause this extreme weather to continue for the next hundred years or more.

Some believe that the earth's weather has already begun to change dramatically.

Taiwan, for example, had some extreme weather during the past Chinese New Year holiday, which was the coldest in ten years.

Other parts of the world, however, have experienced far worse weather.

In Europe last summer, as many as 20,000 people died because of the hot weather.

During June and July, temperatures rose to over forty degrees Celsius, breaking records in France, Germany, and other countries.

The heat caused droughts and forest fires from Turkey to Portugal.

In addition, India was hit by a heat wave earlier in the year.

Temperatures rose above forty-five degrees, killing over 1,400 people.

Heat is not the only extreme weather that global warming may bring us.

Last year, Europe and many Asian countries were ravaged by heavy rains and floods.

And studies have shown that we have already had colder winters, stronger typhoons, and more tornadoes than in the past.

Other studies show that temperatures are definitely rising, with Λmore rain in some areas but less in the tropics.

These factors create unpredictable weather.

The blame for global warming is widely put on greenhouse gases.

Many scientists see our recent extreme weather as a warning.

They argue that we must take steps to limit the emission of greenhouse gases before it is too late.
Some governments disagree, however.

Limiting the emission of such gases would be costly to the economies of some countries.

The United States and some other nations therefore have refused to take serious steps.

The debate over global warming, and its causes and solutions, has become a stormy one.
But as scientists and politicians debate the issue, the earth's weather will probably continue to become more unpredictable and more extreme.
